I can't say I know anything about love. Before I met Miss Z, my
love life was the stuff talk shows are made of. I had bad affairs,
and finally stopped dating altogether for a couple of years.
Then I met an old friend when I returned to college. My old
friend, Miss H, had a roomate, the afore-mentioned Miss Z,
both English majors. We met every Wednesday at a round
table for lunch, a minor Alagonquin (sic in the worst way) table.
Miss Z laughed at my jokes, an excellent way to anyone's heart.
Real laughter, the kind that comes from the diaphram and
deafens you. Needless to say I developed a crush. She
thought I was taken and didn't even give me a second
thought.
I was playing in a Jimi Hendrix cover band at the time, and I
invited both ladies to our show. They came to hear my band
and to celebrate Miss Z's birthday. Over the loudspeaker I
invited strange men to buy her drinks, which they did, and I did,
hell, we all did. We bought her Jaggermiester (again, what a
sic). She got very drunk.
I planned to sleep over at her house because the next day we
planned to see a dance show. She went home while I packed
up gear. I discussed with my friends the ethics of trying to
seduce someone who was incredibly drunk. I didn't want to
start things on the wrong foot. My friends slapped me around
and I went to her house.
She threw up and felt fine. We drank wine til 6 am and then she
took me to her room. We didn't fall asleep untill 10 that
morning.
Of course, many relationships start off this way: alcohol, lust,
sleeplessness. But ours have lasted almost three years, and we
get along like a house on fire. Why? Perhaps we are the most
laid-back people you can find. We respect each other. I don't
have that "there are so many women to bed" attitude, so my
eyes stay on her. She is independent and caring and still laughs
at my jokes. We both respect each other. We see so many
bad relationships that we are aware that it takes work. I hope
to God I never get lazy in love. But what is this? A silly Men @
Mars Women @ Venus thing? No. May love grace your face
and carry you in. Duncan.
